What the PAT Test Involves

There is a visual inspection followed by earth leakage and insulation resistance testing. A pass or fail sticker will be applied along with a serial number that will be logged onto our records. In the event that an item fails will be able to give you an appraisal on whether or not it is economically viable to repair or not. Sometimes it as simple as a damaged plug that just needs replacing. For larger scale PAT testing we can issue a copied folder of all serial numbers tested along with next schedule of inspections and each items test results including a full list of any failed items with an explanation of their failure.

PAT Testing General Advice

Even if your budget does not stretch to professional PAT testing, you should consider the increased risk if the equipment isn’t used correctly, isn’t suitable for the job, or is used in a harsh environment. Not all items require annual inspections and class 2 items that don’t require an earth don’t even need PAT testing. Just using some common sense can help maintain some degree of electrical safety, i.e. Is the lead damaged, is the correct sized fuse in the appliance, is it functioning correctly. Plus even if an appliance has been PAT tested , there is nothing to say it couldn’t have been damaged in the meantime, a visual inspection is always recommended at regular intervals and a PAT sticker should not bread complacency. Things to continually evaluate:

Is the electrical equipment is being used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
Is the equipment suitable for the job
Has there been any change of circumstances
Has the user has reported any issues.
That there are no signs of internal damage, overheating or water damage to the plug
That the correct fuse is in use and it’s a proper fuse, not a piece of wire, nail etc.
That the wires including the earth, where fitted, are attached to the correct terminal and the terminal screws are tight
That the cord grip is holding the outer part (sheath) of the cable tightly
No bare wire is visible other than at the terminals
